The Reddit group r/opals, falsely presenting itself as the “International Opal Society,” has been the source of ongoing abuse, passing off, and IP infringement targeting multiple individuals and businesses. Offences include copyright theft, defamation, coordinated group harassment, and disability-based discrimination, in breach of the Equality Act 2010. Victims have reported victimisation, harassment, unlawful data disclosures, and the deliberate incitement of platform abuse by group moderators. Numerous takedown requests and legal notifications have been ignored, while false reviews and impersonation efforts have caused commercial and reputational damage. These actions have been documented, spanning 2023 to 2025, are now subject to ongoing investigation, UK High Court proceedings, DMCA enforcement, and complaints filed with relevant authorities.
